LATEST NEWS
From a report by Trudi Gibson
in Veterinary Times March 2nd.
Supporters offelinemicrochipping
are confident the practice will
one day be made compulsory - if
they secure the backing of the
veterinary profession.
Maggie Roberts, Cats Protection
veterinary director, commented
in the article that there are lots
of advantages for vets in having
cats microchipped. She pointed
out that we just have to think of
all the unidentified stray cats that
get hit by cars and are taken into
vet surgeries - if vets could find
the owners straight away it
would make the treatment much
smoother and easier.
However, despite support from
MP’s and welfare groups
including the RSPCA, Defra
(Department for environment,
food and rural affairs) said it
would not consider mandatory
microchipping of cats. The Cats
Protection are confident that
this will change, saying that it
was not that long ago that the
Government wasn’t going to
consider the microchipping of
dogs, which will become
compulsory by April 2016.

A charity is running what it
describes as the only dedicated
retirement home for old cats.
Lincolnshire Trust For Cats has
almost 80 felines - some
because their owners have died
or because they’ve moved
abroad. The trust said that
some charities have a few
elderly cats, but they are not
doing it on the scale that they
are. For cats to go to the
Trust, people need to make a
provision in their will, or decide
after coming to look round.
