Worming
Parasite control is particularly important in older equines,
as they do not develop an immunity to the majority of
gastrointestinal worms and are often more susceptible.
Lameness
Ask your vet to examine your horse for lameness at an
annual health check.
Blood tests
A blood sample can be taken to screen your horse
for the presence of Cushing’s disease (PPID), liver
problems or other medical disorders.
Your vet will be able to offer you a winter
health check for your horse or pony. This may
include some, or all of the elements listed
here, depending on what is appropriate for
your old friend.

Your vet will examine your horse’s feet; hoof
testers may be applied to the feet and the
limbs will be palpated for presence of heat,
pain and swelling.
Blood samples
can be an invaluable aid
for you and your vet, providing not only
information to aid the diagnosis of disease,
but when done routinely, they can provide
an early warning of impending illness.
