On
Wednesday 6th March
XLVets and
Nottingham Farm Animal Veterinary
Society (NFAVS) undertook the latest
in a series of extra-curricular sessions
for students with a particular interest
in farm animal medicine. Enthusiasm
and attendance were at record highs,
with all 30 places being snapped up by
1st to 4th year students within an
hour of being advertised.
Steve Smith and Rob Henderson of XLVets
Midshire Veterinary Group visited Nottingham
Vet School and delivered two sessions to a
group of 30 enthusiastic vet students with a
keen interest in farm animal work.
Rob delivered an extremely engaging session
on displaced abomasums in cattle. The
group discussed normal anatomy, how the
abomasum can become displaced and all
the different conditions which can lead to this.
Rob successfully connected with the students
through his obvious enthusiasm for teaching,
combined with a number of team challenges
and tests of knowledge and understanding.
After labelling numerous diagrams of cattle
gastrointestinal tracts and producing
mind-maps of diseases and conditions leading
to abomasal displacement the whole group
had a much better understanding of how
and why DAs occur.
Rob then moved on to describing the different
options for correcting DAs, bringing the theory
to life with many diagrams, models and
anecdotes from his personal experiences in
practice. The students relished the opportunity
to pick Rob's brains and explore his reasons
for approaching DAs as he does and how to
adapt their learning at Vet School to real
world farm practice. Meanwhile Steve was
with the other half of the group attempting
to ‘Demystify the routine fertility visit’.
Both the sessions sparked lively discussion
over the half time tea and coffee break before
the students switched over and attended their
respective second session of the afternoon.
Everyone who attended thoroughly enjoyed
the afternoon and felt that they had gained
valuable knowledge on both approaching
displaced abomasums and routine fertility
visits in practice.
NFAVS are extremely grateful to Rob
Henderson and Steve Smith of Midshire
Veterinary Group Ltd. and to XLVets for their
continued support in providing further
education for veterinary students interested
in farm practice. We have had excellent
feedback on all our sessions so far from
students and vets.
