Beef Expo 2013
The XLVets and XLVets Training Services
team and a band of merry XLVet
member helpers, once again set out
to create a presence at Beef Expo, and
what a presence we have nowadays!
Not content with the FarmSkills stand
demonstrating knowledge transfer, we
also provided information and advice
on disease control in the 'Beef from
the Dairy Herd' exhibition and in the
'TB Opportunities' area.
It's amazing what a set of lungs in a box on
your trestle table attracts. Thankfully not flies
like last year. On the other hand I'm surprised
it wasn't a polar bear, for late May it was
absolutely freezing! They did however
stimulate some great discussion, giving
farmers the opportunity to chat with vets about
healthcare plans and disease control on farm.
TB is obviously a contentious issue but the aim
of the exhibit was to relay a positive message
on what can actually be achieved when
working in a TB restricted area, something
that Paul Rodgers from XLVets Allen & Partners
did, extremely well.
The FarmSkills stand focused on promoting
the English BVD control programme and
encouraging farmers to eliminate PI's.
Following a fairly slow start to the day,
visitors began arriving and eventually a
gentle flow of bright green calf buckets
was witnessed throughout the event.
As ever the XLVets stand was manned
by a group of willing volunteers from
local practices as well as staff from the
FarmSkills office who were kept busy all
day with a constant stream of visitors
who were treated to one of our now
infamous green FarmSkills buckets - so
much so that the reserves we sent for
at lunch time were all gone before the
end of the day!
This year’s stand focused on promoting our
upcoming programme of sheep related
workshops throughout the summer as well
as the XLVets Grass Roots Worm Control
campaign. Our fantastic new Lambing
workbooks were also on display with many
people putting their names down for
lambing workshops later in the year.
All in all a successful day was had, with
nearly 400 new contact details taken from
potential workshop delegates and many
more directed to our new FarmSkills website
should mean hopefully an even busier few
months ahead!
NSA North Sheep 2013
This year’s NSA Sheep Event returned to the North
with a bang after a quieter year in 2012 in Malvern.
Helped, I’m sure, by the fantastic weather, the crowds
descended on Crimple Head Farm near Harrogate in
North Yorkshire on 5th June for what proved to be an
exceptionally well attended and busy day.
