Kitty Jenkins - Equine Graduate Programme article

It sounds like the course was quite social? Yes, the group would socialise in the evening and go for a meal or to the pub for a drink. We all got on really well and have stayed in contact since, over a what’s-app group. I’ve found it good to have people in the same position as me that I can talk to about cases or just to bat ideas around with. As part of the Graduate Development Programme you are assigned a mentor; how have you found this? I feel like I have really landed on my feet and am working at a really supportive practice and was given a mentor on day one. This has been brilliant, especially in terms of facing the on-call rota. My mentor, Phil, was able to gently ease me into the OOH rota. Initially, when I got a call, Phil would ask me if I was okay with it. If I was, I would set-off and he would follow 15 minutes behind. If it was something potentially tricky, like a calving, he would offer to come with me. As I got more confident, Phil would follow behind and arrive 30 minutes later. Since April, I have been doing OOH on my own, but I know Phil will be there if I need him. Would you recommend the programme to other graduates at XLVets? Yes, definitely, I found it invaluable and would encourage any other new grads thinking of doing it, to go for it.
