Diabetes Booklet

Exercise Regular exercise is good for diabetic pets but should be consistent day to day to help stabilise insulin requirements. This will also help controlled weight loss, which can be of vital importance. Correction of underlying factors Weight management, spaying and stopping steroid administration (if your pet is on steroids) may all help improve the condition of a diabetic animal. Diabetes is a life-limiting condition. This means that your pet will not live as long as they might have done without the disease. However, with advances in treatment and regular checks, your pet can live a very comfortable and normal life. Remission Cats have a form of diabetes which can revert back to normal. This is called diabetic remission. With treatment, it is possible for approximately half newly-diagnosed diabetic cats to go into remission, ie effectively remove all signs of the disease and the need for treatment. Some of the cats that go into remission become diabetic again later, but some can remain non-diabetic for life. Cats are most likely to go into remission if the disease is caught early and managed closely with insulin, diet and weight loss in the early stages. Speak with your vet to find out more. 06 Uncover the signs of diabetes
